Masjid and Imambara in Residency of Old Lucknow

The Masjids and Imambaras of Lucknow have a history that dates back several centuries.

One of the most famous Masjids in Lucknow is the Jama Masjid, which was built in 1423 by Sultan Ahmed Shah of Gujarat. The Masjid was later destroyed by the British during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, but it was rebuilt in the late 19th century. Today, the Jama Masjid remains an important center of worship for Muslims in Lucknow.

The Asafi Masjid, also known as the Asafi Imambara, was built by Asaf-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh, in 1784. The Imambara features a large prayer hall, as well as a courtyard and a series of underground tunnels. The Asafi Masjid is known for its intricate architecture and beautiful interior decoration.

The Bara Imambara, one of the most famous Imambaras in India, was built in 1784 by Asaf-ud-Daula. The Imambara is famous for its unique architecture, which includes a labyrinthine maze called the Bhool Bhulaiya. The Bhool Bhulaiya is a series of narrow passages and staircases that lead to a rooftop terrace with stunning views of Lucknow.

The Chota Imambara, also known as the Hussainabad Imambara, was built in the 1830s by Muhammad Ali Shah, the third Nawab of Awadh. The Imambara is known for its beautiful interior decoration, including intricate chandeliers and silver-encrusted walls.

The Masjids and Imambaras of Lucknow represent an important part of the city’s history culture and diversity. They offer a glimpse into the legacy of the Nawabs of Awadh, as well as the religious and cultural traditions of the people of Lucknow.
