Museum: The Triads of Menkaure

The Triads of Menkaure are a group of three statues discovered in the valley temple of Menkaure, an ancient Egyptian pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty. The triads depict Menkaure standing between the goddess Hathor and the goddess Bat. The statues were part of a larger complex built by Menkaure himself, featuring the smallest of the three Pyramids of Giza.

Triads of Menkaure

The Triads of Menkaure is a unique representation of the pharaoh with two divinities, celebrating the union of the pharaoh with a major and local deity. The triads were common in Ancient Egypt and served to symbolize the pharaoh’s power and authority. The sculptures are made of graywacke and are believed to have been placed in each region of Egypt. Five triads were found in the valley temple of Menkaure, and it is believed that there were eight as there are eight places allocated for them there, in the eight corridors of the temple. The five triads were found in good condition, except for one completely broken and the other almost intact. Three of them are now in the Egyptian Museum and two in Boston.
